Awake fibreoptic intubation for airway burns.
A young adult was admitted to a casualty department with severe burns sustained in a motor vehicle fire. His airway was initially patient, but in grave danger of obstruction due to inhalational injury. Conventional methods of airway management were unable to guarantee a patent airway and a novel approach is described.
متن کاملManoeuvres used to clear the airway during fibreoptic intubation.
Fibreoptic orotracheal endoscopy under general anaesthesia may be more difficult to perform if the upper airway cannot be fully cleared. We have studied the effectiveness of jaw thrust, lingual traction and the application of both manoeuvres simultaneously, in opening up the orolaryngeal airspace in 30 ASA group 1 or 2 patients aged between 16 and 70 yr undergoing elective general surgery requi...

Securing the airway is a core skill in anaesthesia, the gold standard of which is tracheal intubation. Normally this is achieved after induction of anaesthesia. However, some circumstances demand an awake approach. Skilful airway management is critical in deep neck space infections. There is currently no universal agreement on the ideal method of airway control for these patients because this d...
متن کاملAirway regional anesthesia for awake fiberoptic intubation.
Providing anesthetic care to the patient with a difficult airway keenly interests anesthesiologists and is a situation that often provokes much anxiety and trepidation. However, dealing effectively and safely with these patients is a skill that all anesthesiologists should be familiar with and are expected to perform with competency. Difficult airways arise from multiple causes. Access to the o...
متن کاملFibreoptic awake intubation--a method of topical anaesthesia and orotracheal intubation.
Three cases of trismus caused by oropharyngeal sepsis are described where fibreoptic-assisted awake intubation using an oral airway intubator and nebulised lidocaine was safely and successfully achieved.
